2019 CELF Summer Institute: Los Angeles, CA

06/24/2019 - 06/27/2019

Description

Today's students are tomorrow's leaders!  Discover how to transform student learning into an authentic exploration of real-world problems and solutions. Deepen your knowledge of sustainability principles and practices, including place- and project-based learning, environmental literacy concepts and systems thinking, to inspire your students to create a sustainable future for all.

CELF’s first Los Angeles Summer Institute in Education for Sustainability (EfS) builds on our four years working with LAUSD and fifteen years of experience in our home state of New York. We present a proven, systematic and transferrable framework for creating a sustainability lens: a way of seeing the world that fosters understanding of environmental, economic and equity issues and fosters a sense of agency and a positive future focus in students. The Institute equips K-12 teachers with tools and teaching methods to weave sustainability seamlessly into existing curriculum in any subject. School leaders learn how to create plans and adopt practices to support their students in developing a sustainability lens over time.

The Institute begins by building a learning community and a common vocabulary around sustainability and progresses with hands-on activities, case studies and guest presentations. The schedule includes supported planning time so that participants will have tangible materials to bring back to their classrooms. School teams gain additional benefit by integrating concepts across subjects and grade levels and embedding sustainability practices into classroom practices and school governance.
